How to avoid sanding through clear coat edges

Clear coat can sand through quickly on edges, corners, and body lines.

Answer

Near clear coat edges, use very light pressure and 1500 or finer. Avoid coarse grits on body lines.

Why it happens
Edges have less film thickness and receive more pressure from the paper, so they cut faster than flat areas.
Recommended grit
Use 1500, 2000, or 3000 near edges. Avoid coarse grits on clear coat edges.
Wet or dry
Wet.
Success check
The flat area is refined without exposed color or sand-through on edges.

What to do

  1. Tape or protect sharp edges when possible.
  2. Use light pressure near edges.
  3. Wet sand with 1500 or finer near body lines.
  4. Polish after the haze is uniform.
Avoid: Do not sand clear coat edges with aggressive pressure.
