Problem

What grit to use for wood prep

It is unclear which grit to use when preparing wood.

Answer

For most wood prep, start with 150 or 180 if the wood is rough, then move to 220. Use 320 only when a finer surface is needed before finish.

Why it happens
Wood prep depends on roughness, grain, and finish type; starting too coarse can leave scratches, while starting too fine can be slow.
Recommended grit
Use 150 or 180 for rough wood, 220 for normal prep, and 320 for finer finish prep.
Wet or dry
Use dry sanding for wood prep. Avoid wet sanding bare wood unless the process specifically calls for raising and re-sanding grain.
Success check
The wood feels smooth, has an even scratch pattern, and is clean before finish.

What to do

  1. Check whether the wood is rough, milled, or already smooth.
  2. Use 120 only for rough spots or old finish removal.
  3. Start with 150 or 180 for normal rough wood.
  4. Move to 220 for general finish prep.
  5. Use 320 when a finer surface is needed before finish.
  6. Sand with the grain when possible.
  7. Remove dust before applying finish.
Avoid: Do not over-sand bare wood with very fine grit before stain. It can reduce stain absorption and cause uneven color.
