Problem

Can I wet sand wood?

Wet sanding bare wood can raise the grain and make the surface feel fuzzy.

Answer

For bare wood, sand dry. Use 120, 180, then 220. Wet sanding is for cured finishes, not raw wood.

Why it happens
Water can swell wood fibers, especially on unfinished wood. Dry sanding is safer for normal wood prep.
Recommended grit
Use dry sanding for bare wood: 120, 180, then 220. Use wet sanding only on cured finishes when the finish maker allows it.
Wet or dry
Dry for bare wood; wet only on cured finish coats.
Success check
The bare wood feels smooth and dry with no raised grain before finishing.

What to do

  1. Dry sand bare wood with 120, 180, then 220.
  2. Remove dust between grits.
  3. Apply finish only after the surface feels even.
  4. Wet sand only cured finish layers, not raw wood.
Avoid: Do not soak bare wood while sanding.
