How to sand polyurethane drips

Polyurethane drips or runs leave raised marks in the finish.

Answer

Let polyurethane drips cure fully, then level with 320 or 400 and clean dust before recoating.

Why it happens
A thick finish area must cure first, then be leveled before the next coat.
Recommended grit
Use 320 or 400 after the drip is fully cured. Use 600 for finer blending before another coat.
Wet or dry
Dry for most polyurethane correction; wet only if the finish instructions allow it.
Success check
The drip no longer feels raised and the area is ready for the next coat.

What to do

  1. Let the drip cure completely.
  2. Level the raised drip with 320 or 400.
  3. Blend the surrounding area lightly.
  4. Clean dust before recoating.
Avoid: Do not sand soft polyurethane drips.
