Problem

What grit removes mill glaze from wood?

Wood finish or stain does not absorb evenly on smooth new boards.

Answer

To remove mill glaze, sand dry with 120 or 150, then refine with 180 or 220 before finish.

Why it happens
Planed boards can have a compressed, shiny surface that needs scuff sanding before finish.
Recommended grit
Use 120 or 150 to open the surface, then 180 or 220 for final prep.
Wet or dry
Dry.
Success check
The surface is evenly dull and ready to accept finish.

What to do

  1. Sand the new board with 120 or 150.
  2. Follow the grain.
  3. Refine with 180 or 220.
  4. Remove dust before applying finish.
Avoid: Do not apply stain or finish over shiny compressed wood without sanding.
