Problem

Wood grain raised after staining

The wood feels rough or fuzzy after stain dries.

Answer

After stain dries, lightly scuff raised grain with 320. Use light pressure so you do not sand through the color.

Why it happens
Liquid stain can raise wood fibers, especially if the surface was not prepped evenly before finishing.
Recommended grit
Use 320 lightly after the stain dries, then clean dust before the next finish layer.
Wet or dry
Dry after the stain is fully dry.
Success check
The surface feels smoother without removing visible stain color.

What to do

  1. Let the stain dry fully.
  2. Lightly scuff the raised fibers with 320.
  3. Use very light pressure.
  4. Remove dust before applying the next finish layer.
Avoid: Do not sand through the stain color.
