Problem

Why does sanding make the finish look matte?

A glossy finish turns matte or dull after sanding.

Answer

Sanding makes gloss look matte because it creates fine scratches. Polish after 3000 for shine, or recoat after proper prep.

Why it happens
Sandpaper creates a uniform scratch pattern that scatters light. Fine sanding prepares for polishing or another coat, but it does not leave gloss by itself.
Recommended grit
Use 1500, 2000, and 3000 before polishing, or use 320 to 600 when preparing for another coat.
Wet or dry
Wet for polishing prep; dry or wet for coating prep according to finish instructions.
Success check
The finish has an even haze before polish or a clean scuff before recoating.

What to do

  1. Identify whether the next step is polish or another coat.
  2. For polish, refine through 1500, 2000, and 3000.
  3. For another coat, use the grit recommended by the coating maker.
  4. Clean the surface before polishing or recoating.
Avoid: Do not expect sanding alone to restore gloss.
