Problem

Can I sand chrome?

Chrome can scratch, dull, or flake if it is sanded incorrectly.

Answer

Do not sand intact decorative chrome for routine cleaning. For refinishing damaged chrome, use wet 800 or finer only.

Why it happens
Chrome is a thin plated surface. Sanding can cut through the plating or create permanent visible scratches.
Recommended grit
Avoid sanding decorative chrome. For damaged chrome that will be refinished, use 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000 carefully.
Wet or dry
Wet for fine correction work on damaged chrome.
Success check
The chrome is not cut through and the scratch pattern is controlled.
