What grit to scuff baseboards?

Baseboards may reject paint or show gloss through the new coat.

Answer

For baseboards, scuff with 220. Use 320 for smoother visible areas before painting.

Why it happens
Old glossy paint needs light scuff sanding so primer or paint can grip.
Recommended grit
Use 220 for normal scuff sanding and 320 for smoother final prep.
Wet or dry
Dry.
Success check
The baseboard surface is dull, clean, and ready for paint.

What to do

  1. Clean the baseboards first.
  2. Scuff with 220 grit along the length of the board.
  3. Use 320 on highly visible smooth sections.
  4. Vacuum or wipe dust before painting.
Avoid: Do not use 80 or 120 grit for normal baseboard scuffing.
