Start from the task: removal, prep, finish, or polishing preparation. Use the least aggressive grit that still solves the problem.

Dry sanding is usually faster for removal and prep. Wet sanding helps reduce dust and improve fine finishing.

Each grit should remove the scratch pattern from the previous grit before moving finer.
